After a year’s hiatus due to the pandemic delays, the South African J/22 Class enjoyed their National Championship on a lake in South Africa. It was an amazing turnout of 20 boats, one of the largest fleets in years, to get back out on their boats and enjoy some camaraderie over the three-day weekend. As the regatta PRO exclaimed, “The wind conditions were a challenge for the sailors and just four races were completed. There were some who appealed to the wind gods for a fifth race. The reason being the final results for several boats were dependent on the discard race kicking in. However, that was not to be. At the conclusion of sailing on Sunday, winning was the trio of Trevor Hulliman, CJ and Vincent on HAY J. Taking the silver medal was Richard, Richard and Tyler on US’N’J. Grabbing the bronze ring was Shelle, Megan and Cameron on SHAMBLES.
The other awards included the following:
• Most Improved Junior- Keagan Nel
• Furthest Travelled and Ancient Mariner- Trevor Donald
• Zero-to-Hero Award- Richard Tanner. Wow, in one day of racing he went from 16th to 1st.
• Ladies Achievement Award- Vanessa Henry. For all she does behind the scenes ensuring we maintain our International One-Design Class status.
